Drizzly weather Chiltern Hills

Chiltern Hills is located northwest of London. Just a 1-hour train trip from Marylebone to Beaconsfield. I was driving by car as there is no direct photo shoot location close to the train station. Luckily my next year’s wedding couple Elise (also a photographer, nice!) and Richard did a great job of finding a superb location for a drizzly weather engagement photo shoot.

Chiltern Hills, located in the United Kingdom, is a picturesque area known for its rolling hills, dense beech woodlands, and charming villages. It’s a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making it a popular destination for hiking, nature enthusiasts, and those seeking a peaceful escape from urban life. The Chilterns also hold a rich history, with ancient earthworks, Iron Age hillforts, and traditional architecture contributing to its unique character. This engagement photo shoot was held in Autumn of 2023 near Penn Village (close to the Penn House area).

YES or NO for a drizzly weather Chiltern Hills engagement photo session?

Breafly. Yes!
Of course, it’s different but there are some advantages you can’t get on a normal sunny day. A drizzly weather photo session can create a unique and moody atmosphere in photos. The soft, diffused light from the overcast sky can be flattering for portraits, and raindrops on surfaces can add interesting texture and reflections. Just make sure to protect your camera equipment from moisture and have some creative ideas in mind to make the most of the rainy setting. It was quite interesting to shoot because you don’t need to focus that much on sun flares or direct sun on to skin, so much more movement and engagement with clients.

No! This type of weather was not planned – the sun was shining the day before the photo shoot and the day after – shit happens. But I love the moody conditions. Of course, it’s extra pressure for the photo editing process and probably uncomfortable for the couple during the session, but let’s say this is not your typical ultra-sweet & sunny engagement photo session. It’s different with the colours but the same with the vibe!
