Weddings in Catalonia, Spain

A Catalonia wedding runs later than you think, and that’s the good part. The ceremony goes on for three to four hours before sunset, dinner is outside after dark, and the party starts around 9 or 10 p.m.

Most couples I photograph here marry at a masia, an old Catalan farmhouse with gardens, or at a villa by the sea. Barcelona El Prat and Girona airports are both within about two hours of nearly every venue, and the roads are easy, so your guests can rent a car and actually enjoy the drive.

A masia day usually runs like this: a ceremony of about 30 minutes, then the aperitivo, an hour and a half, two hours at most. That’s when we slip away for portraits in the evening light. Then dinner under the table lights, warm enough to stay outside long after dark.

The time is more flexible than couples expect. Moving the ceremony half an hour, or even an hour, a few days before is normal here, and guests who flew in from abroad rarely mind a later start. More time to get ready, honestly.

In June, July and August, keep the ceremony closer to evening. Midday light is sharp and hot, and you’d spend it looking for shade instead of enjoying your own wedding. May, September and October are cooler, around 25–30 °C, so midday is fine if that’s what you want.

Travel and accommodation are included in every option. I plan the timeline with you (and your planner or venue coordinator, if you have one), and after 350-odd weddings I’ll tell you honestly when something won’t work. That’s the job.

Where I shoot in Catalonia

Barcelona city. Most couples marry outside the city, at a masia or by the sea, and come into Barcelona for a session the day before. The Gothic Quarter early in the morning, before the crowds, is my pick.

Costa Brava. Palms, beaches, coves and cliffs — a relaxed seaside wedding. Mas Torroella sits ten minutes inland. More in my Costa Brava venues guide.

Girona. Countryside, farmland and green hills, for a wedding that’s mostly about nature. This is masia country, and an outdoor dinner makes the most sense here.

Sitges and the coast south of Barcelona. More of a city vibe: good hotels and luxury venues on the water, and white, modern venues like Masia Cabellut and Xalet del Nin. See the Sitges venues guide.

Mallorca. Ask me.

Venue coordinator or planner?

Short answer: for 20–50 guests, the venue’s own coordinator is often enough. Most couples marrying here from abroad hire someone, so the real question is which kind.

Check first whether your venue has an on-site coordinator. They know the local vendors and can answer most of your questions, and for a small wedding that’s usually all you need.

If you want custom design — your own tables, a ceremony spot nobody else uses, something that feels fresh — look for a planner in the area whose style fits yours. Venue-provided planners get the work done, but they won’t always keep it fresh or high-end.

Make a Pinterest board first, then see whether the venue already does something similar. If it doesn’t, that’s when a planner pays off. Expect roughly €3,000–5,000, and up to €10,000 for bigger designs.

What Catalonia couples say

During the wedding weekend, Miks was laidback and friendly, putting us and our guests at ease. My husband and I would not consider ourselves great at posing for photos, but Miks skillfully guided us for couples sessions in a way that felt totally natural. Not only did he capture us beautifully, but he also caught so many amazing candids throughout the weekend.

Miks was the best decision we made for our wedding. From the moment he arrived he brought such lighthearted, positive energy that instantly put us at ease. On what could have been a stressful day, he made everything feel fun and relaxed. And then the photos… they’re beyond anything we could have imagined and we are over the moon with the result. We’d choose him a thousand times over and cannot recommend him enough!!

Eva & James — This Must Be The Place, Catalonia · Read the review on Google

Miks was absolutely amazing – would 100% recommend for anyone looking for a wedding photographer. We really loved his candid style – he captured the day exactly how we remember it with every special moment – including the laughs and hugs. Looking back through the photos brings us so much joy. On the day he was calm and so lovely to have as part of our day – he completely understood what we wanted and needed without needing any guidance. To say he went above and beyond is an understatement. We were so touched and grateful when he stayed a little later to capture a special moment at the end – it really meant so much. Thank you Miks!!!

Rebecca & Gareth — Masia Cabellut · Read the review on Google

We can’t thank Miks enough for capturing our special day so perfectly. Miks made us feel so relaxed, we didn’t even notice he was there half the time but he managed to snap all of our favourite moments so beautifully. Rather than feeling like we had a photographer, we felt like we had a friend in Miks and we are so impressed with our photos that we will treasure forever. Couldn’t recommend him more.

THE BOOKING PROCESS: STEP BY STEP

Important tips for a wedding in Catalonia

In June, July and August, planners suggest a later ceremony, closer to evening. May, September and October are cooler, around 25–30 °C, so a midday ceremony is fine if you want one. And if the forecast changes, moving the ceremony half an hour a few days before is normal here.

The light is good from one to two hours before sunset and best at sunset and dusk. Mountains around the venue take the light earlier; on a flat coastline it lasts longer.

It works, and shooting in direct sun with direct flash is a modern look now, so midday portraits are possible too. Bring umbrellas and water and don’t overheat. The ceremony and the dinner are the energetic part of the day; save yourselves for those.

Every venue has its own. If an outdoor party matters to you, ask before you book: it depends on how far the venue is from town and other houses. Rural venues away from neighbors, like This Must Be The Place, can allow the party outside.

Barcelona El Prat and Girona are the two airports, and nearly every venue is within about two hours’ drive. Guests from the US or Australia often connect through London, and there are plenty of flights from Italy too.

The day bends around the traditions you bring. Bell Recó was a two-day Indian/American wedding. Tell me early what you’re planning, and we’ll build the timeline around it rather than squeezing it in.

Questions couples ask me

Are travel costs included?

Yes. All costs and travel within Catalonia are included. I arrive the day before, so I can see the venue in the evening light. There’s nothing for you to arrange or add up later.

Which airports are closest to the venues?

Barcelona El Prat and Girona. Both are within about a two-hour drive of most venues in Catalonia, and the roads are easy for guests who rent a car.

What time should our ceremony be in Catalonia?

Three to four hours before sunset, or later in June, July and August. In May, September and October it’s around 25–30 °C, so a midday ceremony is fine too.

Do we need a wedding planner in Catalonia?

Not always. For 20–50 guests, the venue’s own coordinator is often enough; for custom design, hire a local planner whose style fits yours.

How far ahead should we book?

12 to 18 months. That’s when most couples write, usually once the venue is confirmed.

How do we get your packages?

Write to me with your date and venue. I send the full packages by email within a day.

HI !

I’m MIKS

I am incredibly thankful to be the husband to my beautiful wife and father to my two children. Education? I am a real estate manager and worked in the industry for almost a decade, but 10 years ago I discovered my real passion: photography. Since then, I’ve photographed 350+ weddings across Europe and still look forward to new adventures and meeting the coolest people on the planet.

Why do I love weddings? I love to be near happy people. There are always loads of good vibes and good moments at weddings. I’m the solution guy, and it does not matter where the wedding is planned – you will need the wedding visual arts service solution.

It would be a real honour to meet you in person and work on your wedding day, whether it’s a small family wedding or a massive luxury event. I work with a team of up to 4 people – other wedding pro photographers, assistants and wedding videographers with various editing styles. A full wedding visual art service from idea to delivery!

I’m happy for some crazy nominees and features in the wedding photography world, but nothing is better than a real and enjoyable wedding like yours. Please let me know if you have any questions – I want to make sure you have all the answers, solutions & safety!

Let’s talk about your day

Tell me your date and the venue — even a shortlist. I’ll check if I’m free, put a soft hold on the date for a week, and send the full packages by email within a day. If you’d rather talk first, a 20-minute call is usually enough for me to ask the two questions that matter: what time is the ceremony, and who decided that.
