Weddings at Lake Como, Italy

A wedding at Lake Como runs on two clocks: the ferry timetable and the sun behind the mountains. Plan around both and the day feels effortless. Ignore them, and you spend the afternoon waiting on a pier in a dress.

At Villa Monastero in Varenna, the ceremony terrace sits right on the water, about a 500-meter walk through the botanical gardens from the gate. Arta and Edgars rented the room beside the terrace to get ready, and said their vows in full summer sun. The terrace has a roof, but the sun came in from the side, and it was hot; the ceremony was short, so nobody melted. Then everyone walked to the café next door for the aperitivo while we took the boat out.

Boats are the point of Como, not a gimmick. The public ferries link Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio and Cadenabbia all day; a private boat (we used Menaggio Water Limousine) brings you straight to the villa’s own dock. A vintage boat costs about €500–600 for an hour, and under €1,000 is enough for the iconic Como photos. Thirty minutes on the water covers photos, video and drone, so I’d take it during the aperitivo.

Summer on the lake is hot, and shade is rare: there aren’t many trees on the shore, and villa terraces are usually open to the sky. So plan for sun at the ceremony and keep it short. The light on the water gets better after that, around 5, 6 or 7 p.m., and the later the better as the sun goes down. If you can slip away from your guests for 30 minutes on the boat in that light, do it. I plan the portraits around the light, not around the time printed on the invitation.

After 350-odd weddings, I’ve learned that timing protects the feeling of the day more than any detail you can buy. Travel and accommodation are included in every option. I plan the timeline with you (and your planner, if you have one), and I’ll tell you honestly when something won’t work. That’s the job.

Two photographers at Lake Como

A Lake Como day rarely stays in one place: getting ready in two villas, the ceremony on a terrace, a boat somewhere in between. For a full day I recommend two photographers, and I usually work with Liene. We’ve been friends since high school. One of us stays with you, the other with your partner and the guests, so nothing happens while we’re on the wrong side of the lake. More about how we work as a wedding photography duo.

Other lakes? See Garda, Maggiore and Orta on my Italian lakes wedding photographers page.

THE BOOKING PROCESS: STEP BY STEP

Important tips for a wedding at Lake Como

Be ready for straight sun. There aren’t many trees on the shore, and villa terraces are typically open, with no shade. At Villa Monastero, the ceremony was in full sun from the side, even under the terrace roof: hot, but short, so it was fine. The best light on the water comes after the ceremony, around 5, 6 or 7 p.m., and the later the better as the sun sets. Midday is the easiest time to slip away from your guests, but 30 minutes on the water in the evening light is worth planning for.

The public ferries link Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio and Cadenabbia through the day, and they are part of the fun for guests. For the two of you, a private boat is the better plan: it takes you straight to the villa’s dock and doubles as the portrait session. We used Menaggio Water Limousine for Arta and Edgars. A vintage boat costs about €500–600 for an hour, and up to €1,000 is enough for the iconic Como photos; bigger, newer boats run €1,500–2,000. Thirty minutes covers photos, video and drone, and the aperitivo is the best time to go. A taxi from Bergamo airport to Varenna is about €180.

Villa Monastero is a public garden with a ticket gate, so your guests share the paths with visitors until the terrace, which is yours. The terrace hosts a ceremony of about 30 people, and there is a room right beside it you can rent for getting ready. It’s strict: no confetti, and your time on the terrace is short. Other villas on the lake are more flexible, and confetti and some music are usually fine. Drones are a different story almost everywhere: Como is a restricted area, so a drone needs insurance and an agreement with the venue. Make sure that paperwork is done, or there will be no drone photos. For wedding questions, the villa answers at [email protected] or +39 0341 295450.

The one mistake I see at Como: guests arriving by public ferry or the shuttle boats that cross from one shore to the other. If it isn’t a private boat, be early. The boats fill up, parking near the piers is tight, and looking for a space can cost you the boat you need, especially if your hotel is on the other shore. Summer traffic gets busy. So come early, enjoy the view, have an Aperol spritz or a glass of champagne, and walk into the ceremony relaxed. Nobody wants to miss the wedding.

Villa Monastero is a public park along the shore: gardens, trees, stairs, old houses and some of the iconic Como views, so there are loads of spots for portraits. It’s also busy with tourists, so if privacy matters to you, choose another villa for the ceremony. It works the other way too: if you’re marrying at a smaller venue, Monastero is a good place to go for the portrait session. At the big villas, Balbianello and the like, you don’t need to go anywhere; the iconic views are on site. Your guests only need a regular ticket (€13 for the whole botanical garden; buy it online here), but that ticket doesn’t cover a wedding shoot. The villa sells photo-shoot slots (€300 per hour in 2025, minimum one hour, the two of you and the photographers included), booked at least 14 days ahead, and decorations and music aren’t allowed. Drones need extra paperwork with the Province of Lecco.

Enjoy the wedding – now or never!

Also useful before you book anyone: what a wedding photographer costs in Italy and the mistakes couples make planning a wedding in Italy. Thinking of a smaller day? Here’s how I work as an elopement photographer in Italy. And if you’re still choosing between regions, here’s how I work as an Italy wedding photographer, with Tuscany, Puglia and the Amalfi Coast side by side.

Questions couples ask me

Do you really travel from Latvia for this?

Yes, every time. I’m based in Latvia and fly into Milan — Malpensa or Bergamo — usually the day before, so I can see the villa in the evening light. Varenna is about an hour and a half from Bergamo by car (a taxi is around €180) or by train from Milano Centrale. Travel and accommodation are in the package, so there’s nothing for you to arrange or add up later.

How far ahead should we book?

Most couples write 12 to 18 months before the wedding, and May, June and September Saturdays at the big villas go first. If your date is closer than that, write anyway — I’d rather tell you I’m free than have you assume I’m not.

Can we do a boat session?

Yes, and you should. A private boat picks you up at the villa’s dock, and 30 minutes is enough for photos, video and drone. I’d do it during the aperitivo; the closer to 5–7 p.m., the better the light on the water. A vintage boat for an hour is about €500–600. For Arta and Edgars, the boat was the portrait session.

Do you work with our wedding planner?

Happily. I’ll ask for the planner’s contact early so we can talk timeline before the day, not on it. On Como, that mostly means boats, ferries and who is standing on which pier at what time.

Do you photograph elopements at Lake Como?

Yes — a villa terrace, the two of you, a boat and an afternoon. Half-day coverage works well here; see how I work as an elopement photographer in Italy.

How do we get your packages?

Write to me with your date and venue. I send the full packages by email within a day, usually the same day. They’re not on the site because they make more sense next to your own plans than in a comparison tab with eleven other photographers.

Lake Como Wedding Photographer 1

HI !

I’m MIKS

I am incredibly thankful to be the husband to my beautiful wife and father to my two children. Education? I am a real estate manager and worked in the industry for almost a decade, but 10 years ago I discovered my real passion: photography. Since then, I’ve photographed 350+ weddings across Europe and still look forward to new adventures and meeting the coolest people on the planet.

Why do I love weddings? I love to be near happy people. There are always loads of good vibes and good moments at weddings. I’m the solution guy, and it does not matter where the wedding is planned – you will need the wedding visual arts service solution.

It would be a real honour to meet you in person and work on your wedding day, whether it’s a small family wedding or a massive luxury event. I work with a team of up to 4 people – other wedding pro photographers, assistants and wedding videographers with various editing styles. A full wedding visual art service from idea to delivery!

I’m happy for some crazy nominees and features in the wedding photography world, but nothing is better than a real and enjoyable wedding like yours. Please let me know if you have any questions – I want to make sure you have all the answers, solutions & safety!

Let’s talk about your day

Tell me your date and the venue — even a shortlist. I’ll check if I’m free, put a soft hold on the date for a week, and send the full packages by email within a day. If you’d rather talk first, a 20-minute call is usually enough for me to ask the two questions that matter: what time is the ceremony, and who decided that.
