Elopements on the Amalfi Coast, Italy

An Amalfi Coast elopement is a small wedding where the place and the photos get as much time as the ceremony. Most couples I photograph here have 10 to 20 guests, a symbolic ceremony at a villa, and then a boat or a couple of hours in Positano. Just the two of you works too.

Some of them still call it a small wedding. Two couples at Villa Ricky in Sorrento called theirs an elopement, because so much of the day was the photo session in Positano or the boat ride along the coast. Honestly, the name matters less than the plan.

Where you stay decides a lot. Sorrento is bigger, and its streets are full, so I don’t plan street photos there; the villa and a boat do the work. Positano is smaller and more flexible, and the pebble beach with the village behind you is one of my favorite backgrounds on the coast.

Elopement coverage is often 3 to 5 hours, but I like to be there from the morning: meet you while you get ready, look at the light, and talk through the plan. There’s always a schedule, and the day never follows it exactly. After 350-odd weddings, I’d rather have spare time than a rushed day, because a rushed day looks rushed in the photos.

Almost every couple I photograph here has a symbolic ceremony. Marry legally at home, then let a professional celebrant run the ceremony in Italy. The good ones speak beautifully and keep things moving without anyone noticing.

I work with couples from the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Travel and accommodation are included in every option.

Real elopements on the Amalfi Coast

Small weddings and elopements I’ve photographed on the coast, from Massa Lubrense to Amalfi. Most had 10 to 20 guests.

Positano, Sorrento or Amalfi?

Positano. Smaller than Sorrento and easier to move around. Street photos work here, and the pebble beach with the village behind it is a great backdrop, best at dusk when the lights come on. See Shelby & Calvin’s Positano session and my Positano wedding venues guide.

Sorrento and Massa Lubrense. Sorrento is crowded, so I keep the photos at your villa and on the water. It’s also the side of the coast for sunsets. Villa Ricky is close to both Sorrento and Positano and easy to plan on your own: the villa arranged the chef, the ceremony decor and the celebrant for Shelby & Calvin. Agriresort Villa Edera in Massa Lubrense has a pool, stone architecture and the sea behind the ceremony. More in my Sorrento wedding venues guide.

Amalfi and Villa Vettica. A cliffside villa with a pool and a very wide view of the coast. The sun goes down behind the mountain, so there’s no direct sunset, but the evenings are beautiful and you don’t need to leave the villa for photos. It’s narrow, which is fine for a small group, not for 100 guests. See Lauren & Mike at Villa Vettica.

Still choosing? Start with my Amalfi Coast wedding planners guide, or ask me.

Boat or car on the day?

Boat. One hour on the water is enough for photos. A smaller boat for a few hours costs from about €350 in Positano and €400 in Sorrento; the luxury boats go above €500–600 an hour. Hannah & Oli skipped the Positano session and took a boat out of Sorrento instead.

Car. The black Mercedes vans are how you get around here. A single ride is about €50–100, around €200 gets you a van for 1–2 hours, and about €300 keeps the driver with you for a couple of hours while we shoot.

Crowds. Positano and Sorrento are both busy in the morning, so plan street photos for later in the day. And don’t worry about every stranger in the background; these days they can be removed.

What does an Amalfi Coast elopement day look like?

This was Shelby & Calvin’s schedule at Villa Ricky in Sorrento, on April 30, with 12 guests. Eight hours, one ceremony, and Positano in the middle.

  • 1:00 p.m. I arrive: details, drone shots, everyone getting ready.
  • 2:00 p.m. Portraits of each of you, the bride with the girls, the groom with the guys.
  • 3:00 p.m. Ceremony at the villa, about 30 minutes.
  • 3:30 p.m. Family and group photos, then the first portraits of the two of you at the villa.
  • 4:30 p.m. The couple, the videographer and I drive to Positano, about an hour.
  • 5:30 p.m. Portraits in and around Positano, drone shots of the coast, a vintage car. An hour and a half.
  • 7:00 p.m. Back to the villa in Sorrento, about an hour.
  • 8:00 p.m. Reception details, dusk photos and group photos on the terrace, aperitivo.
  • 8:30 p.m. Dinner, cake, short speeches.
  • 9:00 p.m. Last photos, and I leave.

Notice the two drives. Positano is close to Sorrento on the map, not on the road, so each way takes about an hour. The best months for a day like this are May, June and September. October is fine too.

What Amalfi Coast couples say

Miks is THE BEST. Hire him!! We came from the United States and hired him for a family photoshoot in Positano and our elopement wedding in Massa Lubrense. He was timely, put effort into all of photos, and took our family from spot to spot to make sure we got all the shots we wanted. Most importantly, our wedding photos were STUNNINNNGGGG. Everyone is raving about them. He was so kind to my family too. Super grateful for Mik’s he made our wedding day so much better! The photos turned out so much better than we could have imagined.

We found Miks in our search online for photographers who shoot destination weddings in Europe, and WOW we could not have happened upon a better photographer. Miks shot our wedding in Sorrento, Italy and he did an absolutely amazing job. His communication leading up to the wedding was above and beyond, the sneak peek delivery was above and beyond what he promised, he was incredible to work with the day of (so kind and enthusiastic), we and our families loved working with him, and the photos came out BEAUTIFUL. If you are on the hunt for a destination photographer, look no further!

THE BOOKING PROCESS: STEP BY STEP

Important tips for an Amalfi Coast elopement

Every couple in my Amalfi Coast elopements chose a symbolic ceremony. It’s easier to marry legally at home and keep the Italian part for the ceremony itself. A professional celebrant speaks beautifully and runs the ceremony for you, so nobody has to read from a phone.

An elopement only looks relaxed in the photos if the day is relaxed. Leave room between the ceremony, the photos and dinner. Things run late here like everywhere else, and an extra half hour on the terrace with a drink costs you nothing.

Sorrento is the side of the coast for sunsets. At Villa Vettica the sun drops behind the mountain, so you get a soft evening over the whole coast instead of a direct sunset, which works just as well for portraits.

If we’re moving between your villa, Positano or the harbor, keep the van and driver with us for a couple of hours (about €300) instead of booking single rides (about €50–100 each). Then nobody waits at the roadside in a wedding dress.

Shelby & Calvin and Hannah & Oli planned everything themselves at Villa Ricky; the villa arranged the chef, the ceremony decor and the celebrant. For a more designed day, a planner helps: Lauren & Mike worked with Amia Events at Villa Vettica. My Amalfi Coast wedding planners guide lists 20 of them.

If your family is flying in, add a short family session on another day. Sara & Parham had one in Positano as well as their elopement in Massa Lubrense.

Questions couples ask me

How long is an Amalfi Coast elopement photography day?

5 hours, 7 hours or all day, depending on the package. I prefer to be there from the morning, and coverage isn’t tied to a number of places, so your villa, Positano and a boat can all fit into one day.

Can we elope on the Amalfi Coast with just the two of us?

Yes. Just the two of you works, and so do 10 to 20 guests. The day is built around you either way.

When is the best time to elope on the Amalfi Coast?

May, June and September. October is fine too.

Are travel costs included?

Yes. All costs and travel within Italy are included. I arrive the day before, so I can see the venue in the evening light. There’s nothing for you to arrange or add up later.

Should we marry legally in Italy or at home?

At home, for most couples. All the couples in my Amalfi Coast elopements married legally at home and had a symbolic ceremony in Italy with a professional celebrant.

How much does a boat for elopement photos cost?

From about €350 in Positano and €400 in Sorrento for a few hours on a smaller boat. Luxury boats go above €500–600 an hour, and one hour on the water is enough for photos.

Which airport is closest to the Amalfi Coast?

Naples. From there it’s a drive to Sorrento, Positano or Amalfi, and a private van is the easy way to do it.

How do we get your packages?

Write to me with your date and venue. I send the full packages by email within a day.

HI !

I’m MIKS

I am incredibly thankful to be the husband to my beautiful wife and father to my two children. Education? I am a real estate manager and worked in the industry for almost a decade, but 10 years ago I discovered my real passion: photography. Since then, I’ve photographed 350+ weddings across Europe and still look forward to new adventures and meeting the coolest people on the planet.

Why do I love weddings? I love to be near happy people. There are always loads of good vibes and good moments at weddings. I’m the solution guy, and it does not matter where the wedding is planned – you will need the wedding visual arts service solution.

It would be a real honour to meet you in person and work on your wedding day, whether it’s a small family wedding or a massive luxury event. I work with a team of up to 4 people – other wedding pro photographers, assistants and wedding videographers with various editing styles. A full wedding visual art service from idea to delivery!

I’m happy for some crazy nominees and features in the wedding photography world, but nothing is better than a real and enjoyable wedding like yours. Please let me know if you have any questions – I want to make sure you have all the answers, solutions & safety!

Let’s talk about your day

Tell me your date and the venue — even a shortlist. I’ll check if I’m free, put a soft hold on the date for a week, and send the full packages by email within a day. If you’d rather talk first, a 20-minute call is usually enough for me to ask the two questions that matter: what time is the ceremony, and who decided that.
