Why the Italian lakes need two photographers

Two photographers, four lakes, and a wedding day that moves between villas, boats and terraces. For couples from the US, UK, Canada and Australia getting married in northern Italy.

The Italian lakes don’t really do one-location weddings. You get ready in one villa, your partner gets ready in a hotel further down the shore, the ceremony is on a terrace, and somewhere in the middle there’s a boat. One photographer can be in exactly one of those places.

That’s why every lakes wedding I photograph has two of us: me and a second photographer from my team, most often Liene. One of us stays with you, the other with your partner, then the guests, then whoever is quietly crying in the third row.

The other thing nobody tells you is the mountains. Around the lakes, the sun drops behind the ridge one to two hours before the official sunset time. If your weather app says sunset at 8:45, plan your portraits as if it were 7:15. After 350-odd weddings, I’d rather you hear that from me now than from your planner at 7:40.

The lakes, and what each one is good for

Lake Garda

The biggest of the lakes and the most Mediterranean-feeling: lemon and olive trees, wide water and towns like Sirmione and Malcesine. It suits bigger guest lists and couples who want a lake wedding that doesn’t feel like a museum. Verona airport is close. For venues, see my Lake Garda wedding venue guide.

Lake Maggiore

Grand old hotels in Stresa and the Borromean Islands just off the shore, which means boats are part of the plan, not a bonus. It’s also the closest lake to Milan Malpensa, which your guests will appreciate after a transatlantic flight.

Lake Orta

Small, quiet and a bit overlooked: the village of Orta San Giulio and the island in front of it. Good for smaller weddings and elopements, when you’d rather have thirty people and no crowds than a big villa.

Lake Como

The famous one, with its own page: Lake Como wedding photographer. Villas, boat arrivals and the early-sunset problem in its purest form.

Thinking about Lake Iseo and the Franciacorta wineries? Ask me.

A real lakes wedding: Villa Monastero, Varenna

In August 2026 we photographed Arta & Edgars at Villa Monastero in Varenna. A quiet walk through the villa gardens, the ceremony on the lakeside terrace, then a boat across the lake. A good example of how a lakes wedding day moves between places, and why two photographers matter. See the Villa Monastero wedding.

Important tips for a wedding on the Italian lakes

Get a local planner. Boats, villa rules, guest transfers, vendors who answer emails in Italian. A planner handles all of it, and you get to enjoy your own wedding.

Do the legal part at home. You can marry legally in Italy, but it means documents, translations and a registrar. Most of my couples sign the papers at home and have a symbolic ceremony at the lake. Much less stress.

Plan around the light, not the clock. The mountains mean an early sunset: the sun goes behind the ridge one to two hours before the official time. Put the ceremony late enough to avoid the midday heat, but leave time for portraits before the light is gone.

Not every Italian vendor speaks fluent English, so write things down and confirm by email. (Or let your planner do it.)

Visit once if you can. A scouting trip shows you what the photos online don’t: the stairs, the distances, where the sun actually is at 6 p.m.

Book early. For May to September, 12–18 months ahead. The good weekends go first.

Give the boat a buffer. Boats run on lake time. If the timeline says 15 minutes, budget 30. Nobody has ever complained about extra champagne on the dock.

Enjoy the wedding – now or never!

Plan the light, leave gaps, and let the boat run late. The rest of the day tends to take care of itself.

Questions couples ask me

Which Italian lake is best for a wedding?

Como for villas and the classic look, Garda for bigger groups and a more relaxed feel, Maggiore for grand hotels and islands, Orta for small and quiet. Tell me what kind of day you want and I’ll tell you honestly where it works best.

Do you always come as two photographers?

Yes, for lakes weddings there are always two of us. Who the second photographer is depends on the date. Most often it’s Liene.

Which airport should our guests fly into?

Milan Malpensa for Maggiore, Orta and Como. Verona (or Bergamo) for Garda.

How far ahead should we book?

For May to September, 12–18 months ahead.

Do you photograph elopements on the lakes?

Yes. See elopements in Italy & Spain.

How do we get your packages?

Write to me with your date and venue. I send the full packages by email within a day.
