Affordable Lake Como Wedding Venues: 20 Ways to Marry on the Lake Without Spending €200k

How much does a Lake Como wedding cost? If you’ve been reading about the famous villas, you’ve probably seen numbers above €200,000 and quietly closed the laptop. Here’s the thing: that’s the top of the market, not the entry ticket. Plenty of couples get married on Lake Como for a fraction of that by picking the right venue, the right day and the right guest list.

I photographed Arta & Edgars’ Villa Monastero wedding in Varenna, and it’s a great example: a ceremony on a lakeside terrace, a boat ride, an aperitivo, and none of the big-villa price tags. Below are 20 affordable Lake Como wedding venues and ideas, with rough prices so you can plan with real numbers.

How much does a Lake Como wedding cost?

These are ballpark figures for the whole wedding (venue, food, drinks, flowers, music, planner, photographer), based on what couples and planners report. Always confirm current prices with each venue.

Wedding typeGuestsRough total budget
Elopement: ceremony, portraits and dinner2–10€10,000–30,000
Micro wedding10–30€25,000–50,000
Small wedding30–60€45,000–90,000
Famous villa buyout80+€150,000–300,000+

The big cost drivers are the venue fee, catering (roughly €150–300 per guest at mid-range venues), boats and transport, and the day of the week. Change any one of those and your Lake Como wedding cost drops fast.

Varenna and the east shore

1. Villa Monastero, Varenna

My favorite budget-smart pick. The ceremony terrace sits right on the water, the botanical gardens are made for portraits, and you can rent a room beside the terrace to get ready. It suits small ceremonies (Arta & Edgars had around 30 guests). Say your vows here, then move on to a restaurant or hotel for dinner. Visit Villa Monastero →

2. Castello di Vezio, Perledo

A medieval castle above Varenna with one of the best views across the lake. Lovely for an intimate ceremony and photos, but the walk up is steep, so think about older guests. Visit Castello di Vezio →

3. Villa Cipressi, Varenna

A hotel with terraced gardens running down to the lake. UK travel companies sell packages from roughly £30,000 for 30 guests, so venue, dinner and rooms come in one price. Visit Villa Cipressi →

4. Villa Lario, Mandello del Lario

A resort on the quieter east shore. Prices here tend to be lower than around Bellagio and Tremezzina, and you still get a lakefront terrace. Visit Villa Lario →

5. Abbazia di Piona, Colico

A peaceful Romanesque abbey on a small peninsula at the north end of the lake. An option if you want a church ceremony; ask the abbey directly about dates, then take guests to a lakeside restaurant. Visit Abbazia di Piona →

6. Villa Olmo, Como

A neoclassical villa owned by the city and used for civil ceremonies. Municipal ceremony fees usually run from a few hundred to a couple of thousand euros, a tiny slice of a private villa fee. Visit Villa Olmo →

7. Villa del Grumello, Como

A park villa on the lakeside walk between Como and Cernobbio, with gardens for ceremonies and receptions. More relaxed than the grand hotels nearby. Visit Villa del Grumello →

8. Villa Sucota, Como

Next door to Grumello, with garden terraces above the water. The two are often booked together. See Villa Sucota on Google Maps →

9. Villa Geno, Como

Right at the tip of the Como bay, so logistics are easy: Como is about an hour from Milan by train, and guests can stay in town at normal hotel prices. See Villa Geno on Google Maps →

10. Villa Erba, Cernobbio

A big historic villa that works for 100+ guests, where the cost per guest can stay sensible. It’s a few minutes from the famous Villa d’Este, at a very different price. Visit Villa Erba →

The west shore and Bellagio

11. Villa Regina Teodolinda, Laglio

A small villa hotel that rents out completely. At last check it was roughly €8,000–10,000 for one night with six suites for 12 guests, with catering on top. Great for an elopement or tiny wedding. Visit Villa Regina Teodolinda →

12. Villa Carlotta, Tremezzo

Famous gardens and a museum villa. You pay for a ceremony, not a full buyout, and the gardens give you portraits that look like a six-figure wedding. Visit Villa Carlotta →

13. Grand Hotel Menaggio, Menaggio

A lakefront hotel with a big terrace. Hotels often sell per-person packages, which makes budgeting much easier than a villa with separate catering. Visit Grand Hotel Menaggio →

14. Lido di Bellagio, Bellagio

A lakeside beach club with a relaxed party feel. A good fit for the reception or a welcome party, at a mid-range budget. Visit Lido di Bellagio →

15. Book a famous villa for the ceremony only

Some iconic villas, such as Villa del Balbianello, allow ceremonies without a full buyout. You get the photos, then have dinner somewhere that doesn’t charge villa prices. Visit Villa del Balbianello →

16. Get married on a boat

A private boat with a driver costs roughly €200–400 an hour. For an elopement, the boat can be your ceremony, your portrait session and your transport in one.

If the boat is going to be in your photos, book a classic wooden boat instead of a regular water taxi. The varnished wood, the chrome details and the slow ride across the lake make a big difference in the pictures. Expect roughly €400–800 an hour for a classic Riva with a captain (confirm current prices with the company). Two places to start:

Como Classic Boats, Laglio: a fleet of Riva wooden classics (Aquarama, Ariston, Tritone) plus Venetian-style limousine boats. They do wedding getaway rides and can take your photographer on board.

Cadenazzi Boats, Tremezzina: a historic Lake Como boatyard that builds and restores its own wooden speedboats, with private rides for weddings and special occasions.

17. Have the reception in a lakeside restaurant

A family-run restaurant on the water can host 20–40 guests for around €100–150 per person. No venue fee, no rentals, great food.

18. Pick a weekday or the shoulder season

Monday to Thursday dates, April, May and October are often 15–30% cheaper than summer Saturdays. The light in October is beautiful too.

19. Look at Lake Orta

Lake Orta is small, quiet and about an hour from Milan Malpensa. Civil ceremonies take place at Villa Bossi in Orta San Giulio, and prices are well below Lake Como.

20. Consider Lake Maggiore or Lake Garda

Both lakes have more hotels and more competition, which keeps prices lower. If the lake matters more than the name Como, they’re worth a look. See Lake Maggiore → and Lake Garda → on Google Maps.

What I look for when I arrive at a lake venue

I’m not just looking at the view. I’m already thinking about how the day will move: where the couple gets ready, how guests get from the boat dock to the terrace, where the sun will be at 5pm, and whether there’s a quiet corner for portraits away from the tourists. At Lake Como, I also check the ferry timetable, because the last boat back decides how the evening ends.

For me, the biggest challenge here is the tourists. If you can book the venue entirely for yourselves, you’re fine. But if it’s a public garden or a lakeside promenade, be ready to spend some extra time and energy working around the crowds.

Take Villa Monastero: it’s iconic, and yes, there are lots of tourists. But put that aside for a moment. You can still get the iconic shots you want, and the boat traffic isn’t too bad. Just make sure you book an elegant boat (like the classic wooden boats above), not a random water taxi.

Lake Como wedding cost FAQ

How much does a small wedding in Lake Como cost?

For 30–60 guests, expect roughly €45,000–90,000 in total. A micro wedding with up to 30 guests can come in around €25,000–50,000, and an elopement from about €10,000.

What is the cheapest way to get married at Lake Como?

Elope with a few guests: a civil or symbolic ceremony at a venue like Villa Monastero or Villa Olmo, portraits on a boat, then dinner in a lakeside restaurant.

When is the cheapest time for a Lake Como wedding?

Weekdays and the shoulder months (April, May and October). Many venues close or slow down in winter, so check opening dates first.

Do I need a wedding planner for a budget Lake Como wedding?

For an elopement you can often manage without one. For 30+ guests, a local planner usually saves more than they cost, because they know which venues have fair prices. Read more in my guide to the mistakes US couples make when planning a wedding in Italy.
