Mas Torroella Wedding: A Photographer’s Guide to This Costa Brava Villa
Planning a Mas Torroella wedding? Here’s the short version: it’s a 14th-century stone estate in the Empordà countryside, about 10 minutes from the Costa Brava beaches, and you rent the whole place for your wedding weekend. Up to 250 guests for the party, around 30 sleeping on site, and you bring your own caterer.
I’m a destination wedding photographer, and the venue and coast photos in this guide are mine. Below is what I’d tell a couple from the US, Canada or the UK: the spaces, the light, rough costs, and how to plan the weekend.

What a Mas Torroella wedding is like
Mas Torroella is an old Catalan mas (a fortified stone farmhouse) in Fonteta, a hamlet near La Bisbal d’Empordà, at the edge of the Gavarres hills. The house dates back to the 14th century, with a stone tower, vaulted rooms and thick walls that stay cool in summer.
The big thing: it’s exclusive use. You don’t share the property with hotel guests or another wedding. Your closest people sleep in the house, wake up there, and the whole weekend happens in one place. For couples flying in from far away, that’s a huge relief.
It also feels different from the clifftop hotels on the coast. You get countryside, olive and orange trees, stone and green lawns, and the sea is still only a short drive away when you want it.

The spaces: where each part of the day can happen
This is where Mas Torroella gets interesting. There isn’t one fixed “ceremony spot”; you choose. According to the venue, you’ve got:
The Ruins: old stone ruins on the grounds, a great ceremony spot if you love texture and old stone.
The Secret Forest: a woodland setting, good for a small, intimate ceremony.
The 14th-century entry hall: a vaulted stone room, which is also your rain plan.
Four gardens (Sunset, Pergola, Main and Events Garden) for the aperitivo and dinner.
The pool and pergola for drinks, and the barn / events hall for dancing.
My honest advice: don’t do everything on the main lawn just because it’s the obvious choice. Split it up. Ceremony in the ruins, aperitivo under the pergola, dinner on the lawn in front of the house as the sun goes down, then move inside for the party. Every change of space gives your guests a little “wow” and gives me completely different photos.

What I look for when I arrive at a venue like this
When I get to a venue, I’m not just looking at how pretty it is. I’m already thinking about how the wedding will move through the space. Where is the morning prep, and how far is it from the ceremony? How did the planner set up the day? Where will the sun be at 6 pm, and where will the aperitivo happen?
At a place like Mas Torroella, I also check how narrow or wide each space is (the vaulted hall and the ruins need different lenses than the open lawn), and where I can fly the drone safely. Old trees are beautiful, but they can block the shot or catch a drone, so I walk the grounds first. From above, this estate looks amazing: the stone roofs, the pool and the green squares of lawn are exactly the kind of overview that ties a whole wedding gallery together.
One thing couples don’t always expect: Mas Torroella sits up in the hills, so it can get windy. Plan for it with heavier decor, candles in glass holders, and a veil you’re happy to see flying around (it makes great photos anyway). There also isn’t much natural shade on the grounds, so if your date falls in the hot months, plan the ceremony for later in the evening and have parasols, fans and plenty of water ready for your guests.
Light and the best time of year
The Costa Brava has a long season. The best months for a Mas Torroella wedding are May, June and September: warm days, cooler evenings, and soft golden light. Early October can be lovely too.
July and August are hot inland, and there isn’t a lot of shade on the grounds, so I’d plan the ceremony for the evening, around 6:30–7pm, once the sun is lower. Dinner outside right around sunset (roughly 9 pm in June, about 8 pm in September) is when the warm light hits the stone walls.
Photographer’s tip: plan 20–30 minutes of portraits just before sunset. The orange and lemon trees around the house and the low stone walls make a beautiful, natural backdrop, and you don’t need to leave the property.

How much does a Mas Torroella wedding cost?
Prices change by season and number of nights, so treat these as rough estimates and ask the venue for a current quote:
Venue (exclusive weekend, 3 nights): roughly €12,000 to €35,000+, higher in peak summer.
Catering and bar: since you bring your own, expect around €100–€200 per guest depending on the menu and drinks.
Rentals, flowers, music, planner: often another €15,000–€40,000 for a full wedding.
Total: most full destination weddings here land somewhere around €50,000–€120,000+.
The plus side of a bring-your-own-caterer venue: you have real freedom. You can do a Catalan-style feast, a paella party for the welcome dinner, or a long seafood lunch the next day. How to plan a Mas Torroella wedding weekend
Because you have the whole estate for at least three nights, most couples here plan a full weekend, not just one day. Something like:
Friday: welcome dinner or a relaxed pool party at the villa.
Saturday: the wedding. Getting ready in the house, ceremony in the evening, dinner at sunset, party late.
Sunday: a slow brunch, then a beach afternoon in Calella de Palafrugell or Llafranc.
Only about 30 people sleep at Mas Torroella, so the rest of your guests will stay nearby. Palafrugell, Begur, Pals and La Bisbal d’Empordà all have hotels and rentals within about 15–20 minutes. Book a shuttle for the wedding night: the roads are dark, narrow and winding, and nobody should be driving after the party.
Photographer’s tip: if you book two or three days of coverage, the Sunday at the beach is often where the most relaxed, natural photos happen. Everyone’s off duty, the pressure is gone, and the coast is right there.

Getting there and the coast nearby
Most guests from the US, Canada and the UK fly into Barcelona El Prat (direct flights from many US and Canadian cities, and lots from the UK) and drive up in under two hours. Girona Airport is about 50 minutes away and good for budget flights within Europe.
The coast is the bonus. Within 10–20 minutes you’ve got the little coves of Aiguablava, Tamariu and Llafranc, and the fishing-village charm of Calella de Palafrugell. A sunset boat trip, an engagement session on the rocks, or a day-after shoot by the water are all easy to add. See Mas Torroella on Google Maps.

This whole stretch of coast is seriously scenic. Wherever you are in the hills, there’s a view, and the coves below have some of the clearest water in Spain. The Costa Brava is also one of the most competitive wedding regions in Europe, and that works in your favour: the planners, caterers and florists here keep their standards high.
